Ya’akov Meridor (1913, Poland – 1995, Israel) was an Israeli politician, Irgun commander, and business man. Meridor was a member of the Betar Movement in the 1930s and studied law at the University of Warsaw. He immigrated to Palestine in 1932, and a year later, joined the Irgun, an underground organization of which he became the commander in 1941. In 1945 he was arrested by the British and sent to detention camps in Africa. Meridor escaped detention five times, eventually succeeding to arrive to Israel in 1948. The other detainees were released by the British a short time after.
Meridor was elected to the Knesset as a representative of the Herut party in Israel’s first elections, and remained a Knesset member until 1969. Alongside his political work, Meridor was the co-founder of the Incoda Company that imported canned meat from Eritrea. He was re-elected to the Knesset in 1981, and appointed Minister of Economics and Inter-Ministry Coordination by Prime Minister Begin. Meridor died in 1995.
