Throughout the 1950s and up to the end of the 1970s, Israel and several young African states (such as Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Kenya) initiated various cooperation schemes that were based on the export of Israeli medical knowledge and skills. These included expeditions of Israeli doctors to African states, export of clinical equipment, planning several hospitals and designing of educational programs in which African trainees visited Israeli hospitals in order to obtain western-professional knowledge, such as courses for nurses and the study of medicine in some of Israel’s leading universities.
